About the organization
Since 1991, the Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire (STCB) has been protecting Bonaire's sea turtles. The foundation does this, among other things, through research and education. STCB has four permanent employees and about 60 volunteers who help with fieldwork and educational activities. What it means to be a volunteer at the Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire
Since 2003, the STCB has been conducting so-called 'in-water' surveys and tagging programs to collect information about sea turtles in the waters around Bonaire. These efforts gave the organization a lot of valuable data over time. Every year, from January to April, STCB volunteers snorkel three days a week along the west coast of the island to count turtles and some other species. In total, four counting sessions are organized per day, each of one kilometer swimming. The surveys are conducted in groups of approximately 10 people.
In general, volunteers sail along one day a week. It is important that the volunteer is skilled in snorkeling and has a proper physical condition, because the days at sea are long. It will be expected that the volunteer is available on Monday, Wednesday or Friday from 8.00 AM to 5 PM. It is a plus if the volunteer is able to recognize different species of sea turtles and fishes. There is no compensation for the work available.
